Shoreland Education

The Iron County Land & Water Conservation Department provides a variety of education resources on shoreland topics. Many of these resources are available free of charge or for loan. Additional resources are provided as links to various websites. And others may direct your to a supplier for purchase. Many of the resources listed below will link you to the Presentations, Resouces, or Publications sidebars under our Education button. Some resources here are specific to our shoreland program and not listed anywhere else on our website.

Brochures

We have over 100 different brochures available on the following topics: composting, conservation programs, exotic invasive species, groundwater, manure runoff, nonpoint pollution, stormwater management, shoreland management, water quality, wildlife habitat, yard care, and zoning. You may contact us to recieve a copy of any brochure. If you wish to purchase large quantities, the supplier is listed next to the name of the brochure on our list and conatct numbers are provided. Powerpoint presentations

The Land Conservation Department has developed numerous powerpoint presentations for education purposes. These presentations are used for a variety of audiences including students, Master Gardeners, Lake Associations, County Board officials, Town officials, and the general public.

Shoreland Restoration Guide

The Shoreland Restoration Guide was developed by the Land Conservation Department to assist landowners in restoring and protecting their valuable shoreline buffer.  The guide includes information on the basics of restoration, planting techniques, invasive species, contacts & consultants, nurseries, materials, native plant lists, and more.  The information represented in this guide follows current ordinances in Ashland, Bayfield, Douglas, and Iron Counties. This guide is 31 MB and takes several minutes to download.

Stop Exotics Clean Your Boat

An 11-minute video produced by Minnesota Sea Grant. It shows simple steps boaters can take to prevent the spread of invasive exotics such as zebra mussels, Eurasian watermilfoil, and hydrilla. This humerous video features John Ratzenberger (a.k.a. Cliff from "Cheers") who motivates boaters to take a couple extra minutes to clean their watercraft at the end of a day on the water. String of Pearls The Estuaries of Chequamegon Bay
